Title of the Talk: Computational Image Analysis: Methods and Applications

The computational analysis of images, which has become a paramount research topic, is very challenging as it usually comprises complex tasks like as of segmentation, i.e. the detection, of imaged structures, matching and registration, i.e. alignment, of structures, tracking of structures in image sequences, deformation estimation between structures and 3D reconstruction from images. For example, to analyze the behavior of organs from medical image sequences, first the input images should be segmented, then suitable features of the organs under analysis should be extracted and tracked along the sequences and finally, the tracked motions and deformations should be analyzed. Despite the inherent difficulties, computational methods of image analysis have been more and more used in a wide range of important applications of our society. Hence, applications using 2D, 3D or even 4D image data can be easily found, for example, in medicine, engineering and virtual reality. In this talk, computational methods of image analysis that we have developed in order to analyze structures in images will be introduced; particularly, those developed for image segmentation, matching, registration, tracking and 3D shape reconstruction. Furthermore, their use in applications from bioengineering, biomechanics and material sciences fields will be presented and discussed.

Title of the talk: How to write for and get published in scientific journals

Talk Abstract:

The importance of scientific writing can be defined by a simple quote of Gerard Piel, which says “Without publication, science is dead.” The first scientific journal was published in 1665 and we have travelled 350 years since then. In the last 20 years, science and reporting of science have undergone revolutionary changes. Computerization and Internet have changed the traditional ways of reading and writing. Hence, it is very important for scientists and students of the sciences in all disciplines to understand the complete process of writing and publishing of scientific paper in good journals.

The talk is designed to emphasize on the most important part of research, and that is your research is not complete until it is published. Publishing enables researchers to exchange ideas globally, acquire research funding as well as advancement in their career. Some of the important topics covered will be

  • How to choose the best journal for your paper
  • What is the submission process
  • How to prepare the perfect manuscript
  • What peer review is and how to handle peer review comments, and so on …
